Each one of us wants to live in a home that is welcoming and personalized to our preferences. After all, it’s your home. Maybe you’ve decided to sell your house and want to make some changes. Renovations to make your home more modern and appealing, on the other hand, can be expensive, particularly if you’re on a budget. There are, however, many “tricks” and cost-effective ways to improve the decor of your home, as the examples below show.
Fabric Runner for the Stairs
Stairs are an important part of any home, not only because of their functionality but also because of their aesthetic value. A well-designed set of stairs can attract attention, while a shoddy set can be uninviting. A fabric runner is an excellent way to improve the appearance of any drab set of stairs.
However, you must first re-stain or paint the steps before installing a mesh net down the center. Then, add a fabric runner of your choice and pin it to the wood through the net with a staple gun, and you’re done!
Clean Up the Fireplace
It’s becoming increasingly rare to find a home with a fireplace (a real one, not an electric heater). However, if you are fortunate enough to have one, it can enhance the appeal of your home if properly decorated.
If your fireplace is looking a little worn, all you need is some molding laminate tile and paint to give it a new look, just like these homeowners did with theirs.
Board and Batten Wall
Your bedroom should be a place where you can relax and unwind—a haven where you can leave your worries at the door and enjoy some relaxation. As a result, it’s important to make sure that it looks good.
A board and batten wall were added to this homeowner’s bedroom to bring it up to par. The wall adds texture to the room and appears more elevated with a little work and a few coats of paint. It also functions as a headboard for your bed!
Using Sheets for Windows
Unless you want every passerby to have an unobstructed and intimate view into your home, windows must be covered. There are several options for those coverings, ranging from trendy Venetian blinds to vintage wooden shutters.
There are also less expensive options, such as repurposing some sheets by cutting slits in the thick border at the top of the sheet and making tabs to insert curtain rods.
Marbling Paint Style
The type of paint you use on your walls, and even your ceiling can completely transform the appearance of a space. Marbling paint is a unique look that isn’t as difficult to achieve as it appears.
Paint your wall in the color of your choice with a sponge and latex, and acrylic paint. Then combine the two paints, one white and the other, the same color as the wall. Then, create a unique texture, cut some pieces off the sponge, dip them in your mix, and gently apply it to the wall.
First Impressions
You want your entryway to look nice when you open the door to your home, whether you’re returning from a long day at work or welcoming a visitor. Making a unique batten and board wall is a simple and cost-effective way to accomplish this.
To make a fantastic entryway, set it up and paint it in a color that matches your home’s decor, then add some personal touches and creative accessories. Please don’t overdo it, though!
Bathroom Upgrades
We’re willing to bet that the bathroom is the most overlooked room in most homes, which makes sense given how much time we spend there. That doesn’t mean it has to look bad, though, does it?
You can spruce it up with a few simple touches, such as a border around your mirror and a two-tone paint scheme, as well as adding some shelves to declutter the cabinets.
Modernizing Lighting Fixtures
Lighting fixtures are another household fixture that can go unnoticed but significantly impact the room’s overall appearance. If you have an older home, the fixtures can really show their age if you don’t give them a new lease on life.
Instead of buying a new set, you can make your own mason jar lighting fixture by cutting a hole in the top and attaching the jar to the fixture with the washer that was already there.
Bring in Some Veneer
Since a wall takes up so much space in any room, it’s important to make it stand out. That can be accomplished with a simple DIY project that is neither costly nor difficult.
Mark out where you want to put the veneer that looks like bricks or stones on the wall. All you have to do now is cut it, place it, wait a few hours, and admire your new stunning wall accent, similar to the one shown above.
Taking Care of the Tile
If you have tile as a flooring option, a bathroom upgrade will also mean a tile upgrade. And, if the tile is in good shape, the last thing you’ll want to do is rip it up and replace it with new tile that matches your bathroom’s new style/color palette.
To avoid the headache, pick up some adhesive vinyl tile and lay it on top of the existing tile in the pattern you want. That’s all there is to it.
Unique Fixtures
If you truly want to make a home your own, you’ll want to add some of your own personal touches. This can be a significant change, such as a custom-designed color for your living room walls or a custom chandelier.
We’re not saying you have to make a microphone chandelier like the one in the image above, but with the right materials and a little elbow grease, you can make something that looks like a thousand dollars for a fraction of the cost!
‘Wood’ Floors
Consider using laminated tiles that imitate wood grain if you want wood floors in your home but don’t want to deal with the hassle and high cost of ripping up your current flooring to install them.
It may take a little longer and involve a few steps, but you’ll save a lot of money (and, in the long run, time) while still getting the wood-appeal flooring you want.
Barnstormin’ Closet
The fact that most closet and room doors are dull does not mean yours has to be. It’s simple to make them more appealing by dressing them up. One way to do this is to transform them into rustic chic barn doors.
This can be accomplished by using laminates and then adding slanted wood accents, as shown in the photo. After that, all you have to do is paint it and attach a suitable handle, and you’ve got yourself a charming addition to your home.
Paper & Glue
You can consider putting this paper and glue idea in a crush if you want to have a unique floor that stands out from the ones of your friends and your family (no, it’ll definitely be unique if you stick a bunch of A4 paper on your printer on the floor).
In water and glue, cover thick paper, then extend it across your floor. Once the paper dries, you can add a certain amount of polyurethane to your top, which gives you a single bright floor when it dries.
Bring Your Counters Into the 21st Century
In an older home, old countertops are common, especially in the bathroom, where you might find some ancient-looking marble countertops, as in the image below.
To update it, sand down the sink and repaint it, then repaint the counter and add some white limestone, as this person did. Then, to complete the project, paint the cabinets to match your color scheme.
Play the Base(board)
Does your dining room appear to be a little…monotonous? Then, add some baseboards, moldings, and trim to give it a second chance at life. Yet, if you have a small baseboard and want to add thickness to it.
To save money and time, add a thinner piece of wood above the baseboard and then paint between the two. Now it appears more lively than it was before.
Take all the Trimmings
Look at the mirror in your bathroom (we’ll wait). Do you think it could be spruced up a bit? Of course, you could add a nice trim around it to add some sophistication, but why not install a frame and a shelf in the idle to give yourself more space and give the bathroom some depth?
Cut the mirror in half after measuring it. Then, install your ready-made shelf and the shelving around the mirror using wall molding. Your bathroom will look so much better with some paint and accessories.
Mind the Gap
Gaps between baseboards and door frames are a common problem for many homeowners. However, even though it does not appear to be in good condition, there is a simple solution.
To fill the gap, purchase a plinth block and cut it down to size. The block will blend in with the molding and trim (make sure you get the right color so everything matches!) and dramatically improve the wall’s appearance.
A Miniature Home Theater
Okay, so it’s not quite a theater because we’re assuming you don’t have thousands of dollars and a spare room to put one together. However, if you want to give your TV room a little polish and the feel of a home entertainment system, there’s a simple solution: add a TV frame!
If your TV is placed on the mantle, choose a material that will not clash with the background or existing decor but will instead blend in with the mantle, as shown in the image above.
Stylish Blinds
Nobody wants to look at old generic blinds that add no color or value to a home. Thankfully, you can easily transform those plain blinds into Roman shades, adding a touch of Italian flair to your home.
Grab a pair of scissors and cut the small cords that connect a group of blinds. Then, grab your sewing kit (if you don’t already have one, get one, you’ll be surprised how useful they are – and, oh yeah, learn to sew), sew them into fabric pouches, and you’re done! Some stylish Roman shades.
Get Rid of Those Cabinets
Dusty old cabinets in the kitchen can make it appear as if you’re holed up in an abandoned cabin in the woods rather than relaxing in your comfortable home. Get rid of your old cabinet doors to add some light and make your kitchen appear more open and spacious.
After you’ve removed the doors, re-paint the cabinets and trim the lower counter drawers and doors. Spend money on a new rug, and your kitchen will look like it belongs on a cooking show.
Accent Walls
Accent walls are an option if you don’t want to use paint or wallpaper on your home’s walls. You can even make them out of old pallets or wood to add color, texture, and a rustic feel to your home.
Make doubly sure to stain the wood you choose to create a nice contrast while avoiding a garish clash between your accent wall and your flooring (and other walls). That’s it! If you want to go all out, add some decorations.
Too Much Brass for Your Own Good
Brass fixtures (or any shiny metal for that matter) were once thought to be the pinnacle of interior design. But, on the other hand, Brass fixtures appear cheap in today’s world and, frankly, have no place in your home.
In an ideal world, you’d get rid of them and replace them with something better, but if you’re short on cash, why not just spray paint them? So instead, make a quick sweep of your fixtures with some nice metallic paint and primer.
Industrial-Style Countertops
Remove the linoleum first (with glee). Then, after lightly coating the countertop with a concrete mixture and allowing it to dry, sand it down to make sure it’s even before applying a few coats of staining finish to create a very cool and modern countertop.
If you have linoleum countertops in your kitchen, you should consider replacing them. They’re uninteresting and don’t add anything to the look of the room. However, if you want to go for an industrial look, we’ve got you covered.
Stairway to Heaven
Is your home’s stairwell in desperate need of repair? Perhaps it’s worn out or doesn’t go well with the rest of the decor. Unfortunately, if you decide to make a change, you’ve most likely factored in the cost of tearing it down and replacing it.
But, of course, you could also re-stain and re-paint it yourself. For example, solely stain the wood frame of the staircase a dark color, such as mahogany, and then paint the wood bars white (or stain them the same color) to create a nice contrast.
A Coat Closet Worth Having
It’s not like every home renovation will be easy, but you may need to put in some effort to get a truly outstanding result. This is the case with this coat closet design.
Remove the closet doors but leave them in place (you never know when they’ll come in handy for another DIY project! ), then add shelving and drawers if desired. Finally, paint and hang coat hangers. If you want to incorporate a reading nook as the one shown, go ahead!
Wood Accents for Cabinet Setups
Rather than throwing things away and rebuilding, you can sometimes improve the appearance of a piece of furniture by simply adding to it, as shown in this bathroom cabinet.
This individual mounted wood accents such as legs and bases from chairs and tables on the counter, painted it, and created a stylish ‘new’ fixture for their bathroom. This is terrific!
Creating a Unique Wallpaper Effect
This design concept takes the accent wall concept and adds a dash of rocket fuel to the mix. Of course, you’ll need a steady hand and good painting skills, but the result will be well worth it once you’ve created your own pattern for a wall in your home.
Paint a neutral color on the chosen wall first. Then, create (or find) a pattern you like and stencil it onto the wall to create a wallpaper-like effect for a fraction of the price of wallpaper.
Contact Paper and Removable Wallpaper
Removable wallpaper is a useful tool for quickly changing the look of a room. It obviously works great on walls (hence the name), but it can also do the job on cabinets when combined with contact paper.
The key is finding wallpaper and contact paper that complement each other and apply them with care so that no air pockets or uneven edges appear. But, friend, that’s your responsibility!
Upcycling Furniture
Although an open floor kitchen can be spacious, what good is it if you don’t have a lot of counter space and prepare food? Of course, an island would solve this problem, but instead of spending a lot of money on one and installing it, why not repurpose some of your existing furniture?
If you have an old dresser lying around, you can make your own kitchen island by adding an extendable leaf, removing some of the drawers, turning the holes into a shelf, and repainting it.
Upgrade Your Chairs
The humble chair is arguably one of the most important pieces of furniture that can make or break a room. After all, you want your caboose to be comfortable, but it also has to look good, right? However, if you don’t want to spend the money on a new set, you can always reupholster them.
Change the fabric or opt for leather, then flip the chair over and remove the seat. Then either remove the fabric or cover it with your new fabric. Finally, finish with a staple gun to make your chairs look brand new.
Add Some Flair to Your Closet Doors
If you want to give your bedroom a little more oomph, try using upholstery to make a unique closet door. All you have to do now is remove the door and apply a thin coat of fabric glue.
After that, add some padding and cover it with vinyl. If you really want to go all out, remove the doorknob and replace it with a fancy knocker in the middle of the door, as shown here.
Change the Door Handle
To improve the appearance of a room, you don’t always have to make major changes. Instead, simple changes, such as replacing your tired and worn-down door handle with a modern (or even antique) style, can make a big difference.
It’s simple, cheap, and takes no time at all. Start by removing your old door handle and replacing it with your new doorknob to transform your room’s look completely.
TLC for Your Appliances
When properly chosen and applied, wallpaper is a versatile tool that can be used on walls, cabinets, and even appliances such as the refrigerator, which can be seen here.
We don’t recommend covering your fridge in flamingo wallpaper (that would be a bold move), but there are plenty of other styles and colors to choose from. Before cutting and applying peel-and-stick wallpaper, double-check your measurements.
A Touch of Marble
You have several options when it comes to improving your countertops. You can refinish and even cement them, or you can go all out and get marble – the same stuff that the Renaissance masterpiece David is made of.
Okay, we understand that marble is a pricey material. However, quick fixes, such as painting kits designed to make countertops look like marble, can be found at any hardware store.
Pegboard Genius
Pegboards are a great way to add more storage space to any room in your house, and they look perfect in a rustic setting. In addition, they can easily be mounted on a wall and used to construct shelves or hang decorations.
Because of their versatility, you can give your home a more personalized look and make it appear as if you’ve spent far more money on it than you have. They also assist in decluttering and freeing up space!
Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall
A mirror wall adds a touch of class to any room while also giving the impression of more space. If you have a blank wall and don’t know what to do with it, try using mirrors to create a fun design or completely cover it.
It isn’t as difficult or costly as you may believe. All you need are some double-sided mounting squares and the right kind of mirrors in the right size. Then take your measurements, apply the paint, and admire your one-of-a-kind wall.
Fix Those Air Vents
How many times have you been wowed by a beautiful room only to be turned off by a filthy old air vent that sticks out like a sore thumb? So, if you have air vents in your home that are an eyesore, our recommendation is to hide them.
Like the one shown above, making a wooden air vent is one of the best ways to do this. However, it would be best if you were patient, make sure the wooden slats are the right size, and use the right paint, and you’ll be able to relax knowing the air vent is no longer visible.
A Fresh Coat of Paint
What’s the first thing you notice when you walk up to a house (or an apartment, for that matter)? It’s the front door for the majority of people. If first impressions are important to you, you’ll want them to look nice.
Using high-quality paint to give your door a new look is an easy way to improve its appearance. However, it makes sense to spend a little more on the right paintbrushes and paint because this is a small but important project.
Blanket Ladder
We’ve already mentioned that not every DIY project needs to be a major undertaking. Sometimes all you need are the right accessories, such as a rust blanket ladder, to improve the look of your home.
You can always use a ladder that has already been installed, or you can make one yourself if you’re feeling particularly daring. It will take a little longer, but since you will be choosing the wood, style, and paint, it will feel completely original, and you will likely appreciate it more.
Floating Shelves
We like to say that a home should be your sanctuary, but the bathroom is frequently overlooked when people decide to renovate their homes. If you’re short on time and money, however, you can install custom floating shelves that will transform the look and feel of your bathroom.
The shelves may be made of wood or metal (you can even use antique metal for added character). It’s then simply a matter of putting it together and accessorizing it.
A Home for Your Plants
Make some DIY planters for the front entrance if you don’t have a garden but still want to display some beautiful plants in your home. You can now buy a ready-made planter for a reasonable price (depending on how badly you want a professionally made one).
Or make one yourself out of lightweight materials like plywood or 1′′ thick lumber. After that, add some plastic planter pots and a coat of paint or sealer to make the wood water-resistant, and you’re ready to go.
METALLICA
Returning to the interior, we’ll look at how to incorporate metallics into your interior design portfolio, whether it’s through fixtures or furniture. However, finding the perfect brass coffee table can be difficult and expensive.
A less expensive option is to purchase a table in your price range and spray paint it with metallic paint (we recommend gold to give it an added touch of elegance).
Legs for the Bathroom Sink
You may be unfortunate enough to have a bathroom with a wall-mounted free-standing sink. It isn’t the most efficient use of space, and it doesn’t look particularly appealing. A pedestal sink is one option.
You have the option of building a storage system underneath it or attaching prefabricated legs to it. Always remember to paint it to match the rest of your home’s decor.
Wall Sconces
Because you’ll be working with electrical wires, this project may necessitate a little more experience and time. However, the payoff will be well worth the effort! Adding wall sconces to your home can elevate it to a new level of elegance and chic.
The best part is that you can do it yourself – there are plenty of tutorials and blogs online that will show you how to install them and work with the wiring from beginning to end, so if you’re patient enough and really want some sconces, why not give it a shot?
Style Up Those Tiles
It’s all well and good to have a solid-color floor, but do you know what really draws the eye? This is a fantastic design! But, of course, you can also make your own if you have a cool stencil pattern and some chalkboard paint.
The first step is to clean and tape the area where the design will be placed. Second, evenly distribute the chalk paint on the floor. Third, align your stencil and copy the pattern onto the floor using a different color of paint.
Repurposing Old Doors
If you’ve ever taken a door or doors out of a closet or another area of your home for a project, keep them! Like this coat-hanger entryway door, an old door is a perfect canvas for turning into an accent piece of furniture.
Sandpaper, antique-looking ironwork, and coat hangers, as well as extra wood for shelves and drawers and paint, are all you will ever need to do this hack! It’s that easy!
There Shall Be Light! (And Paint)
A cluttered room is an eyesore in any house, and if it has dark tiling and cabinets, it will most likely be the most unsightly. The solution is to repaint the room and add some natural lighting.
Remove the blinds and replace them with curtains and paint the cabinets and floor a lighter color (white is a good choice). If you want something a little sexier, you can add a nice two-way color design to the floor, as this homeowner did.
Style Up the Sink
A sink can often be the unsung hero of an unattractive room, and even more so if it is a brightly colored sink, that clashes with the rest of the decor.
Fortunately, the solution is simple: paint it! To avoid getting paint on the faucet and handles, sand the sheen off the basin and remove them (or cover them with tape).
Wood and Corbels
Get some wood planks, a few corbels, and some paint to update your plain breakfast island without breaking the bank (all items you can pick up at your hardware store on the cheap).
A simple but effective way of adding some class into your kitchen is to add the wood pane and corbels to the desired area of the island. This would improve the appearance of your kitchen.
