Burned To The Ground

When the scent crept down his throat and burned his nostrils, he knew he was in trouble. He was beginning to believe that starting a fire was his only option. However, whatever had to be done had to be done quickly — before someone was hurt. So he prayed with every fiber of his being that no authorities would arrive.

Dream Home

While everyone else in his community desired a three-bedroom luxury condo in a gated community, Tom Markems had other ideas. He’d always yearned for a simpler life in the country. So it’s no surprise that he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to buy a cozy cottage in Ohio for a ridiculously low price. However, there was something about the house that he couldn’t quite grasp.

It Was A Steal

The log cabin was set on a 30-acre plot with an apple orchard and its own water source. Tony could transform the cabin into a self-sustaining woodland paradise with some effort. But he couldn’t help but think it was all a little too good to be true. Why was it so inexpensive?

It Was Only The Beginning

After a bit of digging, Tony discovered that the previous owner of the house had recently lost his wife and that he wanted to get rid of the property as soon as possible so that he could retire to Florida. Tony, on the other hand, was not about to stop there. The first thing he needed to do was make sure the old structure was sound. Oddly, in the middle of the kitchen floor, there was also an odd access point. But Tony had only scratched the surface of what he had discovered.

Sealed Shut

The trapdoor in the kitchen was nailed shut with dozens of thick nails for some strange reason. It was also glued shut with some kind of industrial-strength adhesive, which was strange. Tony summoned a repairman to investigate, and even he was taken aback. They finally broke it open after much cursing and heaving. Then they were hit with the smell.

A Foul Stench

The odor from inside the door was enough to make them recoil and gag. Whatever it was, it was enough to make Tony want to vomit all over himself. What could have caused such a foul odor down there? It reeked as if… No, it’s not true. It’s not possible. Tony couldn’t help but remember the previous owner’s recently deceased wife.

Deep Down

Tony and the repairman slid their heads and flashlights into the hole in the floor with caution. Tony was startled to hear a loud gasp. Tony’s mechanic grabbed his collar and yanked him back. As he yelled, “Stay out of there!” the man’s face had turned white. As two legs appeared, Tony peered in, holding his breath.

Uninvited Guests

Six more crawled out. Spiders are a type of spider. They weren’t just any spiders, though; they were deadly funnel-weavers. They were swarming out of a massive nest beneath the hole. Tony and the repairman began stomping on whatever tried to escape and slammed the trapdoor shut, knowing they were capable of a nasty bite that could damage human flesh. Regrettably, this was only the start of their nightmare.

The Next Problem

Even after they had disposed of the nest and it was finally “safe” to look in further, there was still the issue of the foul odor that persisted. They carefully climbed the crumbling, rusted ladder to the hidden room beneath the cottage, one rung at a time. The answer was right there in the corner. It was also oozing.

An Ooze Of Nightmare

Long, ruddy tendrils grew along the sides of a cement enclosure, similar to a cistern or a rock bathtub. Inside, the goopy mixture was slick and gleaming, with a suspicious rainbow sheen across it. It took everything Tony had not to become ill. It was revolting. Then he noticed something protruding from the nightmare concoction. It turned out to be a bone.

Letting Out A Sigh

The repairman sighed. He grumbled, “Stupid raccoons.” Tony, on the other hand, was finally able to unwind. It may have been the foulest odor he’d ever encountered, but at least he didn’t have to call the cops. But what was the purpose of the hidden room? He had never seen anything like it before.

A Small Hole In The Wall

The two men traded theories as the icky clean-up began. Isn’t it possible that it was an old-fashioned storage room? Maybe a bunker or a place to clean up after a hunt? A small hole in the wall, filled with ash and decaying wood, added to the strangeness. However, there was no chimney or other means of venting the smoke. Then they came across something even stranger.

The Attic

Back inside, the handyman noticed that the house had a massive A-frame on one side of the roof that was higher than the other, but the low-ceilinged rooms inside didn’t account for all that extra space. So he inspected the ceiling, thinking there must be some sort of storage space up there until he discovered a trap door. An old ladder tumbled out with a light pull on a small metal ring, raining pink insulation, and dust everywhere. And when he and Tony peered inside, they couldn’t believe what they saw.

Another House Inside

A wall with a door sat oddly amid the fiberglass insulation about halfway down the attic. What was even stranger was that there was a roof, but the attic completely obscured it. Tony’s heart could no longer take it. What else might they discover inside his house?

Weirdest Thing He’d Ever Seen

Because there was no power in the attic, Tony was forced to rely on his flashlight once more. They carefully stepped onto the floor, the smell of decades of dust in their nostrils. The heat and dense darkness hung over Tony like a cloak, raising the hairs on his neck. He’d discovered something straight out of a horror film.

A Lot Of Questions

Why hadn’t the previous owner mentioned any of this to him? And who used to live here? To find out, they took one shaky step after another. Tony had another nagging thought in the back of his mind: who was still living here? With a gentle kick of his foot, he was greeted with a sight he’ll never forget in the beam of his flashlight.

In A State Of Decay

As if the apartment in the attic was shedding its skin, peeling wallpaper in outdated hues of pea green and pastel pink sloughed eerily off the walls. Mold, dust, and rat nest odors rose from the floor with each step they took. Their t-shirts were pulled up over their heads. They had to be careful not to inhale insulation fragments, let alone the dangerous mold spores that were present.

They Found Three Rooms

Tony and the handyman deduced that the strange, self-contained apartment had three rooms. Except for an old cabinet, there was no furniture left. Other signs that these rooms had been used as living quarters were strewn about — an old hat and a tire abandoned and forgotten for who knows how long. There was also a toilet…

Bathroom

There was a toilet and sink in the bathroom. It appeared to be plumbed into the main house’s main water and sewerage lines. But why did his house have a creepy house inside it? Tony went back to Reddit because he had more questions than answers. However, some of the responses did little to reassure him about what he’d discovered.

Creeped Out

The redditors who saw the pics were understandably creeped out. “House For Sale. Reduced price due to big nope in the attic,” one quipped. “I didn’t want to be the first to say this,” another user wrote, “but it reminds me of the terrifying stories of where people keep family members locked up.” Another observant user had a theory.

Building A Shell

“How does something like this happen? I looked through all his pictures and it looks like the floor is covered in insulation…” he wrote, “So does that mean all of the insulation you see is actually just his ceiling with the insulation sitting on top? Did OP crawl around on rafters to walk around up there?” the user continued, “It does look like they added a roof and an addition. Almost like they built an entire shell, (roof and walls) around the original house and decided to just keep going and make it bigger.” Tony, on the other hand, required more concrete answers.

He Found No Clues

Tony even went so far as to inquire about the cellar and attic with the previous owner. He only said, “They’ve always been there.” The strange rooms were extremely aggravating. He hoped, however, that someone on the internet would be able to help him. The responses poured in, but they were more entertaining than helpful.

Hell Room

The area beneath the house was officially named as “hell room,” and Tony promised to keep everyone informed about his plans to turn it into something useful. The winner appeared to be a cold-storage room for winter vegetables. But there was one thing he had to do before putting a single potato down there.

Cleaning The Area

He stocked up on bleach and other cleaning supplies, in addition to spraying the entire space with spider-killing spray. But, of course, if he wanted to put food down there, he had to first get rid of the slimy layer of rotting roots and years of watery rust. But what about the rest of the house, which is housed in the attic?
