Troops in Belgium and northern France had to pass through narrow trenches and stay for weeks at a time. The trenches were, in fact, the cause of the First World War’s mass casualties. These were the soldiers who had to emerge from the trenches to deal with approaching forces. Unfortunately for them, the area was effectively a “no man’s land,” making them easy targets for the offensive gunfire.
