Former cast member Matt Barnes has discussed how scripted and staged the entire program is. Tanya Young has backed up the charges, claiming that the producers set up the drama by pitting the wives against each other.

The show featured everything you’d expect from a reality show. On a regular basis, there was backstabbing, teen angst, and love conflict. The show appears to be extremely scripted. According to Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag, they were requested to shoot one sequence fifteen times. It was the part where she thought she was “pregnant,” and he reacted strongly. The show’s producers have since admitted to casting a number of characters, including Lauren’s co-worker’s best friend.
