Culturally speaking, we have come to understand that Jesus looked very much like a white man with facial hair and was clothed in a white or cream robe. For individuals who believe in Jesus that was always basic information that they certainly knew about. However, others supposed he looked like a person from one of those historic paintings or an image of God’s intended existence. We consider this information to be correct. However, historiography and a professor at the King’s College by the name of Joan Taylor found evidence that Jesus did not actually look like the images that we all know and are familiar with.
Why Do Historical Painters Portray Him Like This?
The big question is why would today artists portray Jesus in a way that was not how he looked like during the time that he was alive? It appears as though various studies have been concluded which made artists paint pictures from the past several centuries of several Gods. So, when Jesus became a more well-known person during that era, artists created an image that represented something closely related to the idea of the Messiah. This is the effect of all the images we see today in many different places.
Out Of This World Accessories
In the present time, many historians have studied Jesus and have made some fascinating conclusions. There seem to be some apparent contrasts in relation to the accessories the Messiah was wearing, these images did not correspond to the exact time frame to which he lived. Often Jesus is painted with a halo above his head or sitting on a powerfully decorated royal chair. However, according to recent findings, this representation does not make sense. During the time of Joan Taylor’s research of the Kings of Kings, she found that Jesus’ appearance was actually quite plain and more of an ordinary man.
What Is Written In The Bible?
Many religious folks would dispute what has been written in the Bible. They would even go as far as to argue with other religious groups to prove them wrong. And what is their disagreement about? The appearance of the Messiah and what he looked like during that time, and they believe the bible shows exact evidence. Certain indications show us what happened during that era, some say Jesus was an ordinary man that would not stand out in the spotlight. It was as though he was like ant another average man who was living a normal life.
There was also some indefinite information that was not clear when it came to portraying the exact appearance of Jesus. Approximately a century ago, many artists made use of a poetic license and diverse kinds of imagery to create their desired portrait. Additionally, some artists did not only depict their desired representation, but they also created their personal style on that day to convey their own illustrative meaning.
The Good Shepherd
Figurative artists created images of Jesus in the meadows while there was a lot of sheep. The concept comes from the idea of trying to show the Messiah “the good shepherd.” This implies that he was the shepherd of his people. If one was a shepherd, it showed a good appearance for a leader. People would follow his lead despite that the image of Jesus was painted during the age of the early Roman times. Several images were discovered in the city of Rome which has said to be remote from the homeland of Jesus.
The Picture Is In The Stone
The concept that Jesus was a bearded Caucasian was accepted during the time of the middle ages. However, the image of the Messiah portrayed as a good shepherd only became prevalent in more recent times. He appeared as a man to be wearing cream or white clothes, with long hair, and a beard. This is the image that is often seen in today’s day and age.
Many historical artists have not been able to find any explanatory report in the Bible. Despite this being a guide as to what the Messiah actually looks like, it later became a reason as to why the artist wanted to create their own personal image of Jesus. What seems to have happened is that artists joined the images from previous artists to create an identical portrait of him.
An Improved Image And Feature
Recently, many artists have made revised images that include old paintings to create a similar but new form of Jesus. This idea was used by artists to create their own desired images. At the time of creating their ideal image of the Messiah, they would base the main subject on those who produced the first image, and young artists were able to pursue the same idea.
Original Work Of Art
Another example can be taken from Greek Gods, on the image of Zeus statue, he was shown as a mythological god with long hair and a beard, which was also similar to Jesus. Even the clothes that Zeus was wearing was a white robe. This image amazed many and left an impact on people especially being a story of mythology. Every artist wanted to include their original features but with then intentions to make people feel the same way with the other images.
It’s Not The Same
Despite the fact that the image was a complex figure, there were still some artists who were in awe as to how “Zeus” had been created. If we look at the images that were developed during the time of the conceited Roman Emperor Augustus, we are able to see that the emperor had a desire to be more like Zeus. But if we take a closer look, the image actually did not look like the emperor himself.
Somehow The Same With Zeus
The Roman Emperor Augustus needed his sculptor to make minor details of him as his try appearance would not be similar to the finished product. His exhibition was a short hair and a clean-shaven man. But people that love during that era wanted to see more complex ideas. So in order to create that sort of imagery, he created an image that made his hair and beard very similar to Zeus.
The Last Supper
Historian Joan Taylor collected evidence that gave her idea about Jesus. She claimed that the Messiah would never sit on that sort of throne. It may seem something more common amongst people in this day and age. However, this image of him would never be truly presented during the time that he was alive. We’re still not truly able to tell if this theory is true or not, despite this being the most common imagery that was known when he was with his followers attending the last supper.
The Modern Look
Statements were released about these illustrations that made the historians inquisitive. Many suggestions have also been made that several original works from those artists had been changed. This is what made us believe that it was the real image of Jesus, however it was not. Historians noted that artists created their work base around an evangelical theme. There was an example of those images that had been altered, such as the sword had been remodeled to look like a bible, the key figure was decorated to make it look like an amnesty for other people.
The Perfect Image
Even after all those years, people thought that every image of Jesus would look similar to the old ones. Including the outline, facial features, as well as how he wore a white or cream robe. Occasionally, few artists would paint Jesus with a halo over his head. Various artists created many different exemplary images of the Messiah. Jean explained that many people wanted to see Jesus as a holy person.
The result of the image was that the artists intended to create Jesus as a divine being. If people had to think about superheroes in our generation compared to during the age of the Roman people and Greek gods, then they could say that having long hair could mean a sign of power. Currently, that could also be a sign or feature of a strong and immense human. The trait of the Messiah had a resemblance to other characters that were considered to be as powerful as He was.
Is He Just An Ordinary Human Being?
Other evidence from authorities has appeared regarding the appearance of Jesus, it includes the same image from previous generations. His facial features appeared to be more natural compared to other people that may have been included in the same portrait. Because of this, many were able to tell that he was a Savior and not just an ordinary human being.
An Evidence Of What He Really Looked Like
During the past few centuries, evidence has surfaced about the shroud of Turin was the Jesus Christ’s burial shroud. Other evidence has also been found that indicates a clear picture of his body. Through these signs, some artifacts were discovered in that location that could provide more evidence about the true appearance of the Messiah.
Some Philosophers Question The Evidence
In the USA, there was a historian and a professor that was unsure about the evidence of the shroud. He claimed that during the middle ages, deceiving a person did not really happen and was more of an occurrence during the current times. He believed that the evidence relating to the shroud was just a hoax created by other people who believed that the Messiah used it. He also explained that the scam would have a religious sanction, and this was a method for scammers to earn money.
What Does He Really Look Like?
Despite the fact that we are not able to genuinely believe some of the images from the medieval period, Joan, along with her team had studied several ancient relics such as the old papyrus scrolls that were used in ancient Egypt, which they would observe remains that were discovered in cerian burial sites. It was their approach to discovering the appearance of Jesus during that era, they believed that it was the ideal way to confirm the structure of the Messiah when He was still alive.
They Have Different Fashion Statement
Along with her team, Joan was insistent on discovering the true appearance of Jesus from the time when He was still living. She tried to draw a comparison with other ordinary men that lived during that time. There was a possibility that Jesus was also wearing this kind of clothing daily. During that time, many pastors and members of royal families could be seen wearing very similar attire. The Bible claimed that John the Baptist had distinct kinds of clothing. But the type of clothing that was worn by the Messiah was not mentioned.
What Is He Wearing?
After getting to know about the scrolls and images from the era of the ancient Egyptians, the historian uncovered the types of clothing the average person would wear during the time of Jesus. Many precise explanations regarding these clothing and about the average person came to light.
The Tunics Are Not Long
When Joan discovered some evidence from this time period, she came to the conclusion that the average men wore a tunic. However, it was not long enough like the ones represented artwork. All men who were living during that time period were dressed in a knee-length tunic. This allowed for more flexibility when they were performing their daily tasks. Any piece of clothing that was longer than those tunics were very impractical, specifically for those doing their job.
Only Upper-Class Can Wear Full-Length Robes
Joan also discovered that there were different classes of people living during that time. Most of the upper-class would occasionally wear full-length cloaks or robes, which would sometimes mean that they were flaunting their social status, and they did not need to earn a living during those days. The historian considered this to be another piece of evidence about what the Messiah looked like. Jesus did not wear this type of robe as he was a simple, humble man.
The Color Is Dull
The proof indicated that Jesus did not wear that full-length cloak or robe like those upper-class people who lived during those times. The Messiah was wearing a knee-length robe like any other common man. However, would the color of his robe be similar to the images that we could see today? Studies have shown that during those times, there was no way to whiten the color of the fabric, this meant that it would be impractical to make the color of the guardian’s robe white. Most tunics during that era were designed from a material called plain wool. In the Bible, reports said that the clothes he was wearing were white and then a shiny color when He became a God.
Additional features from many images show that Christ was wearing a blueish cape or a veil that hung over the robe. However, why was his robe or mask colored in various shades of blue? Perhaps there is a real meaning as to why the color blue was chosen. Historians had no explanation about the color of his clothes, and sometimes consider that there was in fact no true meaning.
Not A Traditional Mantle
Other variations of films and imagery show the crucifixion, in the film we could see that Jesus wore a short tunic and a cape. Historians supposed that the robe that the Messiah was wearing was not a traditional cloak but a type of prayer garment.
Not One But Two
Historians even considered that Jesus owned two different types of prayer shawls. There were narratives in the Bible explaining that the Messiah took oof a scarf to bathe his followers’ feet, and then when he was praying he was wearing a different cloak.
What Shoes Is He Wearing?
Historian Joan Taylor even confirmed the type of shoes Jesus was wearing, evidence from remains showed us that the Messiah left many pieces of fabric in a certain location which was then proof as to the type of shoes He once wore. After some analysis, they found that it was a form of a sandal. This time, Joan assumed that this was the equipment that the Savior had used to shield in his day to day life.
After all the assumptions, many are interested in knowing exactly what the Messiah once looked like. We would happily like to know what he really looked like during his time, many illustrations and representations are everywhere to be found but are they a true indication of what Jesus really looked like? There was some proof of his preserved remains that were looked at in the homeland of the Savior. The remnants had two facial features, one was Grecian, and the other was Egyptian.
In some depictions, specific images had given us a better understanding of Jesus’s facial features. There were portraits on some Egyptian mummies showing some facial features, the historian considered these remains of the mummified bodies to be ones of people who both lived and died during the same era as Jesus. These images were excellent evidence to show just how accurate the similarities of the Messiah features really were.
Preserved Pieces Of Evidence
However, there were still various things that needed to be made clear in order to get a better understanding of Jesus’s appearance, for example by looking at various pieces of evidence that were being kept in an ancient synagogue. This object could help establish the tree features of Jesus, the evidence that was found was located in the magnificent old place of worship, where they saw some preserved pieces that could help them recognize the Savior.
Remains Of Moses
The unfamiliar object may just end the dispute that people are still having. However, it turns out that the remains were located in the area that Jesus was not from. It was actually from the remains of Moses, the big question remains…how this piece of evidence could decode the real appearance of Jesus.
Same As What Moses Is Wearing
Joan explained that the imagery of Moses was an example of the common man who was living during the same time as Jesus. If we could understand which type of similarities Jesus and Moses had, perhaps we could start by comparing their clothing.
They Have Different Hairstyle
However, a concussion has been formulated that Moses had different features because he had shorter hair, and his facial features were cleaner because it was shaven. The evidence that was discovered did not have any similarity to the other imageries that we are able to see in today’s era, despite images of Jesus being created by artists which included long, straight locks which evidently meant womanly or a divine entity.
Thanks to the Intricate Painters
Thanks to all the studies and investigations that Joan Taylor performed on all the remains from the past generation, many recent artists were spot on about Jesus’s facial features. It has also been suggested that their very long or bearded face was a result of their travels, as they could not find something that could shave their faces during their long journey. When Jesus and his followers had traveled across different lands, their facial hair would grow longer, this may be the explanation as to why Moses had also been depicted as having facial hair.
