Raised Eyebrows
Shiloh’s attractiveness would make for compelling stories in tabloids, especially if they could relate it to Angelina’s parenting skills. In 2010, a Life & Style article with the headline “Why Is Angelina Turning Shiloh Into A Boy?The article decided to quote Focus on Family’s warnings that children’s androgyny could cause more long-term harm if left unchecked. The public started to argue against the implication that a child shouldn’t wear whichever they like for Shiloh’s sake.
Defending The Defenseless
The false information spread by the Focus on Family organization in particular was criticized by the National Center for Transgender Equality. As they responded, “Our society needs healthy, well-rounded children whose interests and tastes are as diverse as the children themselves and are not limited by outdated stereotypes of gender.” Angelina would not be intimidated into accepting the least controversial viewpoint, and her Vanity Fair interview defending her daughter only heightened the scrutiny that young Shiloh was experiencing.
