Despite the fact that she had always been physically active, she was told repeatedly that the Marine Corps is a male-dominated environment. She allowed this type of rhetoric to affect her, and as a result, she began to feel judgmental and self-conscious from the very beginning. She had the impression that someone was focusing on just her.

Yet, she swiftly made the decision to pull herself together and brush aside the misgivings expressed by other people. She came to the conclusion that in order to be treated on an equal footing with everyone else, she had to put in twice as much effort as they did. She made the decision to push herself in order to demonstrate that she did in fact belong there. She was fortunate in that there were other women nearby who could assist her and support her as well.
